Patients have the opportunity to improve their local practice - Burnley Practice
20 December 2010

Burnley Practice at Willesden Centre for Health & Care is currently run by Brent Community Services, who are part of NHS Brent.  Brent Community Services also delivers lots of community services such as district nursing and physiotherapy services.

Brent Community Services has decided that it would rather focus on delivering its community services than delivering GP Practice services, and has therefore asked NHS Brent to find alternative providers for the Burnley Practice. This means that in the future NHS Brent will have a contract with a provider todeliver the services in your practice.

There are 70 other GP Practices in Brent and each of those practices is already delivered in this way. In order to provide the best GP service at your practice, NHS Brent will invite the best providers of health care to work and deliver services in Brent.

The views of patients of Burnley Practice on their GP services are very important to us and there will be an on-going opportunity for people to be involved in selecting the best provider.  Patients can be involved by completing questionnaires, attending workshops or talking to the staff named below.

NHS Brent is progressing with an open tender for Burnley GP Practice and a Local Enhanced Service (LES) for the homeless service, which was agreed by the Board of NHS Brent after considering the options and views expressed by patients and other stakeholders. The majority of those who gave feedback on the possible ways forward supported this option. This was also the option recommended by the Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 14th October 2010.

NHS Brent has carried out five months of pre-consultation and engagement work with patients, GPs, pharmacists, managers of the homeless hostel and other local stakeholders and we will be continuing our engagement to ensure those opposing fully understand the proposals and the benefits and to also listen to viable alternatives in terms of service specification (particularly patient experience indicators) that others may propose.

Consultation was undertaken with patients from Burnley Practice during January 2010 – May 2010 and patient and public engagement focus groups held from July 2010 to October 2010.  NHS Brent in November 2010 also consulted with the local Patient and Public Steering Group which is comprised of key local Brent stakeholders, on the options appraisal.

The open tender process will not result in a substantial variation in service as Burnley GP Practice for the registered resident population will continue to operate from the same location at Willesden Centre for Health. Therefore there will not be any impact on access to the service or a service reduction/closure.  Neither will there be a reconfiguration of the services; the service is to remain as a GP Practice.

Further consultation with patients started on 16th December 2010 and will run for six weeks ending 31st January 2011 and will focus on obtaining views and comments on the patient experience, in particular the opening hours that patients may wish to have, in addition to those that we would require the provider to be responsible for which will be during the hours of 08:00 and 18:30 Monday to Friday, as this is a national requirement.
