Child Development Service

The Child development Service offers help to children from 0 to 19 years who have a disability or special needs.  The service is provided by a range of professionals with knowledge and skills in assessing and helping children, working together with parents and carers to achieve the best possible outcome for the child. Referrals are accepted from parents, health, education and social services. The service co-ordinator can be contacted for advice.

The service involves professionals from:
Brent PCT Children’s services (children’s doctors, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupation therapists, community children’s nurses, paediatric dietitian, paediatric audiology)
Local Education Authority (educational psychologist, early years team, Portage service)
Social Services Department (social workers from the children and young peoples disabled team)
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (child psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychotherapists)

Children and young people are assessed initially either by a single member of the team or in a multidisciplinary clinic. Further assessment, investigation and treatment may be needed with referral to a range of specialist clinics and services for children with complex needs. A range of therapy, educational and social services are available to support children and families and are agreed as part of an individual care plan. The service works closely with the voluntary sector and provides information and sign posting to local and national organisations which may be able to provide additional support and advice to families.
