Continence service

A continence nurse specialist offers advice and support to all professionals, children, their families and their carers on all aspects of bladder and bowel problems.

Children with bladder and bowel dysfunction are initially seen and assessed by their named children’s community nurse.  The health visitor, school nurse, or children’s nurse can arrange for the continence nurse specialist to see complex and difficult problems.
Wherever possible continence training and promotion should be undertaken to allow the child or young adult to achieve continence and independence.

As part of the care plan continence supplies may be provided to children over the age of 3 who have a mental and/or physical disability that specifically affects their continence.

Children receiving incontinence products must be reviewed by their community nurse at least 6 monthly. This is to monitor change and to ensure their needs are being met.

Once a special needs child reaches the age of 19 the community nurse will transfer the clients care over to either the learning disability team or the district nurses.
